John R Cosgrove

John R. ("Cos") Cosgrove

John R. (“Cos”) Cosgrove passed away on February 24, 2017, after a brief illness. He was a founding member of the law firm of Jorgenson, Siegel, McClure & Flegel, LLP, (as Jorgenson & Cosgrove) in 1960.

Cos left the firm in 1993 when he continued to practice law outside the firm. Prior to leaving the firm, Cos was a partner specializing in municipal law and litigation. He served as the City Attorney for the City of Menlo Park from 1985 to 1993. Cos handled all litigation for the City prior to becoming the City Attorney, and according to founding member Jack Jorgenson, Cos never lost a case in 30 years.

Cos received his law degree from Stanford University Law School in 1959 graduating first in his class and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1953, where his fraternity brothers gave him the nickname "Cos." Cos was drafted into the Army immediately after graduation in 1953, and served for 21 months, stationed half that time in Germany.

Cos was a brilliant attorney, a strong supporter of the successful effort to extend the vote to 18-year-olds with the passage of the 26th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1971, and instrumental in assisting ex-felons in their effort to regain voting rights. Cos loved nature, especially backpacking in the high Sierra, and traveled extensively with various family members. In his later years, Cos enjoyed reading, history, a little travel, and spending time with his family and friends.
